The United Nations Convention on the rights of persons with disabilities (New York, on December 13, 2006) raises a new legal vision of these people. It takes into account the autonomy, non-discrimination, equal opportunities, recognition of diversity, participation and inclusion.
The Convention has been updated the rights of persons with disabilities, ensuring their full enjoyment. At the same time it matches people with disabilities with the rest of the people, recognizing their difference.
Next to this we have that the Convention is the result of a political negotiation, with the incomplete which may even have been some points to be resolved, as the regulation of certain areas and inequality in care receiving different rights.
The end result is that the Convention emphasizes the interdependence, shuffling dependence and autonomy. The autonomy is important, but it is also established (personal, family, social...) support systems for persons with disabilities.
However, probably, much to legislate, not we will have reached the level of equality for these people, until there is a social sense of solidarity towards them, which would be the most important to achieve in these subjects aim.
